St. Vincent and The Grenadines Medical Mission Trip
April 26 – May 3, 2008
Our team of five health care professionals from Phoenix, Arizona spent a week providing Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat) care to the wonderful people of St. Vincent and The Grenadines. This represented our second trip to Milton Cato Hospital (our first being in November, 2007).
With the invaluable assistance of the Medical Relief Association (headed by Fidel Caesar) and the coordination of Dr. Peter Kagbala, our team was able to treat over 60 patients in the ENT Clinic on Sunday, April 27th. We then performed surgery on nineteen patients during the ensuing week (see census below). Complete operative records and operative notes were documented in the medical records of each patient. In most cases, we were also able to provide medications for the patients to take home upon hospital discharge free of charge. Written post-operative instructions were given to each patient to take home, and any follow-up care was arranged after our departure.
Unfortunately, there are many more patients in SVG in need of surgical intervention – especially thyroidectomy. We wait-listed over twenty patients who will be cared for at our follow-trip (tentatively in late 2008). Our goal is to not only perform surgery while in SVG, but to train local medical personnel to perform thyroidectomies in our absence. We feel this will provide the best hope for conquering the thyroid goiter endemic in SVG.
